“Drinking from a thousand lakes. Finnish prog rock” (from original in Dutch, Jan 22, 2024)

And what else lies ahead from the land of a thousand lakes? Maailmanpuu is the World Tree of Nordic folklore, and like this mythical oak, the band’s songs are echoes of Finland’s healing waters. This quartet delivers vintage prog with psychedelic undertones and sophisticated arrangements. Pink Floyd occasionally peeks around the corner, and just like the British giants, Maailmanpuu knows how to mesmerize the listener. Lyrically, they draw inspiration from the national epic Kalevala, famously set to music by Sibelius. Their third release, Kaimalkuu, is what one might call contemporary retro-prog, and this quartet delivers it with full conviction. A must for fans of the Finnish ’70s band Tabula Rasa as well.
