Kaimalkuu - Album Review (Originally published in Finnish on Nov 27, 2023)

Maailmanpuu is a band with a leaning toward art rock, taking its name from the mystical oak of Nordic folklore. According to legend, the tree firmly supports the sky. The band’s third studio album, Kaimalkuu, explores the essence of nature and traditional tales, anchoring them in contemporary themes. The epic dimensions are supported by delicate melodicism. This retro-tinged whole plays with a soft tone that inevitably brings to mind the endeavors of Haikara, Tapula Rasa, and Finnforest. Guitarist Kimmo Villa’s warm licks in the album’s title track are a treat to the ears. The sound born from Maailmanpuu is rooted in gentleness. Particularly, Sampsa Heikkilä’s nuanced piano, electric organ, and synthesizer patterns ensure the band’s visions come through with a porous, organic quality.
